A rooftop garden poses a challenge for landscape design in terms of drainage, moisture retention and the shallow volume of soil heating under the sun. Therefore, a particular soil profile was specified and a selection of succulents and other drought tolerant plants which don’t mind a warm environment were chosen for this front garden project above a garage.

To soften the lines of the built structures around, an organic, curved pattern of planting was designed for the rooftop space. Furthermore, the garden is predominantly viewed from above, so the pattern was created to read as an engaging plan.

Thoughtful plant selection has provided a tapestry of foliage, displaying contrasts of textures and colours. The seasonal floral display of the different species adds sculptural interest.

Overlooking the unusual and striking forms and colours of these succulents, you feel you could almost be underwater viewing a sample of marine flora within a reef.
